Heli-ski in a Sit Ski

Become the sky. Take an axe to the prison wall. Escape.

Rumi

Having something to inspire me helps me to cope.

When my walls were closing in from chronic illness, I needed to have something positive in my life that kept my world open. For me, being filled up with positive emotions helps keep my world full and me feeling free.

Without this inspiration and happy place, I can get stuck and feel like my world has narrowed to a list of “I can’ts”. Turning that around meant using what inspires me to encourage me to adapt, whether its my outlook, how I do something, or what tool I might use to enable me. Much like grabbing onto a rescue rope, I’m going to use whatever tools I can to hang on or be lifted up so I can feel as free as possible for as long as possible.

So when there is something that I’m excited about or inspired by, when there’s something I genuinely am interested in or appeals to me, it gives me the incentive to create, and to make, and to do

How to find your inspiration

At first I found it hard to find my inspiration. Choosing to adapt and flow can be empowering if you make that choice. “Be like water, my friend” (Bruce Lee).

There are lots of articles about how to find your inspiration. I’ve pulled together a few tips and links below that resonate with me:

The heli-ski was about reaching for the sky; escape!

My first time heli-skiing was near Wanaka’s Buchanan mountain range, which is close to Mt Aspiring. We were very lucky with the weather, we had a fresh but small dumping of powder and no wind. We skied with Harris Mountains Heli-Ski, and it was also their first time taking a sit skier. They were very accommodating and found ways to make it work. They found the perfect run to suit my riding level and the sit ski. A heli-ski was on my bucket list and I did it!
